History of West Midlands

Coventry was one of Englandís most important cities in the West Midlands during the middle ages with its prosperity built on wool and cloth manufacture,   Birmingham and Wolverhampton have a tradition going back to the sixteenth century when small metal working industries developed. Birmingham was know for its manufacture of small arms, whereas Wolverhampton became the centre of lock manufacture and brass working.

The coal and iron ore deposits provided a ready source of raw materials.  The area grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution and by the twentieth century had grown in to one large conurbation.   Coventry was slower in developing and by the early twentieth century had become an important centre of bicycle and car manufacture.
